Sometimes in a relationship, we expect what someone cannot or will not give us. You cannot expect something that your partner/spouse cannot give you because it means what you are expecting is not what they are capable of providing. In contrast, the phrase “will not” demonstrates an unwillingness to meet one’s expectations. Many times, we assume what a person is capable of doing and giving, without discussing our expectations with them. Assumptions are dangerous because they might lead to you designing a reality which might not materialise, which ultimately triggers anger. My question to you is, how can you expect to hold someone accountable for your assumptions? It is vital to create a relationship in which you and your partner/spouse can discuss expectations, that is, expectations of yourselves, each other, and the relationship.
